- Expensive cosmetics aren’t necessarily better - It’s tempting to think that the more expensive the better, but to be honest, most dermatologists prefer to use drugstore products. This is because you can sometimes have an allergic reaction to the expensive ingredients in expensive creams, and if you have oily or acne-prone skin, it’s best to stick to products that don’t have complicated ingredient lists, especially if you’re sensitive.
Refrigerate skincare products when temperatures are too high - While I don’t refrigerate all my skincare products, I tend to keep my eye creams refrigerated year-round. This is because cold eye creams have a quick soothing effect while reducing puffiness under the eyes, and nail enamel stays more viscous and lasts longer when stored at lower temperatures. A chilled sheet mask will help to reduce swelling, and gel creams will stop evaporation. Refrigerated mint-scented body lotion can be massaged into the skin after a workout to help reduce cellulite.
There are some products you should never mix - Applying too many skincare products can clog pores and cause inflammatory acne. In addition, ingredients like retinol, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and benzoyl peroxide should not be applied together. This is because they can dry out your skin, leading to flaking and dry acne.
Squeezing a pimple won’t make it heal faster - Never touch your face with your hands! Touching an inflamed pimple with hands covered in countless bacteria only makes it worse, especially cystic pimples, where the grains are hard to see on the surface, as the inflammation at the root spreads to the surrounding area, forming a hard pimple.
SPF is the most important thing - If I had to choose a cosmetic product to take to a desert island, it would be a cream or sunscreen with a high SPF. Dermatologists consider sunscreen to be the most important skincare product because it protects against free radicals that cause skin cancer and ageing. If you’ve been reluctant to use it because of the whitening effect on your face, you can mix it with your foundation.
Your skin will glow like magic if you have a deft touch - Self-facial massage is no longer an awkward term — a quick YouTube search will reveal a plethora of self-massage techniques. From jade rollers to pulsating ultrasonic massagers, or just use your bare hands to squeeze pressure points for glowing skin. For a gentle, non-irritating massage, we recommend using a skincare product like an oil or gel cream.
A skincare routine before bed is important - If you’re a morning person, it’s worth investing some time in your skin before you go to sleep. Double cleanse to remove impurities, use a toner to blot away any residue, and finish with a serum, lotion, or cream. This way, you’ll only need to apply moisturiser in the morning. Experts cite the theory that the skin heals itself overnight, and nourishing creams with retinol or heavy textures are more effective when applied in the evening than in the morning.
Apply in order of thinnest to thickest texture - It’s easy to think of your skin like a sponge. You apply a light-textured product like an essence or serum first, followed by a heavier-textured moisturiser. It’s important to save the oils, which act as a moisture lock, for last. If you apply an oil and then apply a watery texture product like a serum on top of it, you’re doing yourself a disservice because it won’t absorb.
